In 1974, it became a metropolitan borough in the newly created metropolitan county of Merseyside. It was made a borough in 1207, a city in 1880, and a county borough independent of Lancashire County Council, which was established in 1889. Liverpool is within the boundaries of the ancient hundred of West Derby in the historic county of Lancashire. The city's modern economy has a significant influence on the knowledge sector, maritime industry, tourism, culture, hospitality, healthcare industry, life sciences, the creative and digital sectors.
